Hazard spoke candidly about his experience in an interview with RTBF, saying, “We were talking about the name of Leandro Trossard to replace me, he was having a good season. Even I wondered why I had to play when he had to go on the bench. It is normal for people to think that.”
He went on to explain that after Belgium’s poor performance against Egypt, where he also played poorly, it was understandable for people to question his starting position. Hazard also compared his situation to that of Cristiano Ronaldo, who didn’t play the last matches of the World Cup with Portugal, yet remained an integral part of the team.
Hazard’s admission sheds light on the pressure and scrutiny that comes with being a top-level athlete, even at the international level.
