Edo state governor Godwin Obaseki has been sued over allegations of certificate forgery.
Edobor Williams, Ugbesia Abudu Godwin and Amedu Dauda Anakhu filed a suit before a federal high court in Abuja challenging the authenticity of his academic qualification.
The trio averred that the embattled governor forged (B.A.) certificate in classical studies from the University of Ibadan.
According to them, the offence violates section 182(1)(i) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).
In view of this, Obaseki is not eligible to vie for the office of the governor of Edo state in the forthcoming 2020 governorship election.
Reacting to the suit, counsel to the governor, Alex Ejesieme, said the suit is frivolous and irrelevant.
Ejesieme, in an interview with Daily Trust, said the defence team is preparing the reply to challenge the plaintiffs in court next week.
It will be recalled that Obaseki and Oshiomhole have been locked in a superiority battle over the political control of Edo.
This has caused split within the APC in Edo with some pitching their tent with the former Labour leader while others pledge allegiance to the embattled governor.
Oshimhole’s faction of the APC has picked Osagie Ize-Iyamu who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as its preferred governorship candidate in the 2020 election.
