The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has instructed all political parties in Edo State to stop their campaign activities before the governorship election scheduled for Saturday.
In a statement issued by Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee, the commission specified that all campaigns must end by midnight on Thursday, September 19, 2024.
INEC warned that holding rallies, processions, or media campaigns beyond this deadline would be unlawful.

Additionally, the commission reminded candidates, political parties, and their supporters that wearing campaign clothing or displaying promotional materials at polling stations on election day is strictly prohibited.
The directive referenced Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, as well as item 12 of the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the Edo State governorship election. INEC further cautioned that violators would face penalties outlined in Section 96 of the Electoral Act.

The statement emphasized, “It is illegal for any political party in Edo State to engage in rallies, processions, or media campaigns after midnight today. These restrictions, along with the accompanying penalties, are enforced under Section 96 of the Electoral Act 2022.”
It also reiterated that on Election Day, Saturday, September 21, 2024, no party members, candidates, or their supporters should appear at polling units in campaign attire or carry any campaign materials.
