A committee established by Governor Monday Okpebholo to recover assets from the previous administration of Godwin Obaseki has reported that over 200 vehicles belonging to the Edo State Government are missing.

Kelly Okungbowa, the chairman of the committee, made this disclosure on Friday in Benin City. He shared that three vehicles had been located at a private residence: one Hilux van and two Toyota Hiace buses. Additionally, the committee found palliatives meant for distribution to the people of Edo State inside one of the buses, including 10kg and 25kg bags of garri and rice.

Okungbowa appealed for public assistance in providing further information, emphasizing that whistleblowers would be generously rewarded.

“Since our inauguration yesterday, we have adhered to the mandate from Mr. Governor to recover all missing government vehicles from private hands. We are pleased to report that within 24 hours of our launch, we have successfully recovered one Hilux and two Toyota Hiace buses,” he said.

“We assure the people of Edo State that we will do everything within our power to recover all stolen vehicles. Reports suggest that more than 200 vehicles are still missing. We call on the public to assist us, as whistleblowers will be rewarded.

“This is not private property; these are the assets of the people of Edo. It is unacceptable for anyone to keep government property unlawfully.”

Okungbowa also revealed that the recovered vehicles were found at a private residence, with palliatives stored in one of the Toyota Hiace buses. He speculated that more vehicles could be hidden in the homes of former government officials, including the Chief of Staff and the Secretary to the State Government.

The committee has given a 48-hour deadline for the return of any government vehicles in unauthorized possession. “Information is crucial, as these three vehicles were recovered thanks to tip-offs from the public. We are now focused on other locations where we have received reports of government vehicles being stored,” he added.

Okungbowa assured that the operation has proceeded without resistance, as security agencies are supporting the recovery efforts.
