The POS operator recounted the incident to reporters, explaining that the suspect came in asking for biscuits, drinks, and other items. He claimed to be in the area for a burial ceremony and wanted to entertain friends before the event.
“I provided the items for him, and as I was about to pack them into a bag, he asked for bottles of water,” she said. “As I went back inside to get the water, he stepped into the shop and grabbed the bag containing my money.”
“When I returned with the water, he asked me to total the items and said he needed to buy a bottle of groundnuts from a nearby shop. It was only when he mentioned leaving that I checked for my bag and realized it was missing.”
At that moment, she raised the alarm, which alerted local youths who chased and apprehended the suspect. The POS operator stated that her bag, containing both the money and her phone, was recovered from him.
The suspect was reportedly nearly beaten to death by the mob before police officers arrived to take him into custody.
