Edo: Suspected Thief Beaten for Allegedly Stealing N400,000 from POS Operator

Angry residents in the Luck Way area of Ikpoba Hill, Benin City in Edo State reportedly beat a suspected armed robber severely after he was allegedly caught stealing N400,000 and a mobile phone from a Point of Sales (POS) operator.

EKO HOT BLOG gathered that the unidentified suspect stole the items from a woman who operated a POS service in her shop. He is said to have entered the shop pretending to buy snacks and drinks before committing the theft.

The POS operator recounted the incident to reporters, explaining that the suspect came in asking for biscuits, drinks, and other items. He claimed to be in the area for a burial ceremony and wanted to entertain friends before the event.

“I provided the items for him, and as I was about to pack them into a bag, he asked for bottles of water,” she said. “As I went back inside to get the water, he stepped into the shop and grabbed the bag containing my money.”

“When I returned with the water, he asked me to total the items and said he needed to buy a bottle of groundnuts from a nearby shop. It was only when he mentioned leaving that I checked for my bag and realized it was missing.”

At that moment, she raised the alarm, which alerted local youths who chased and apprehended the suspect. The POS operator stated that her bag, containing both the money and her phone, was recovered from him.

The suspect was reportedly nearly beaten to death by the mob before police officers arrived to take him into custody.
