EKO HOT BLOG reports that Chelsea Football Club’s goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has been informed by the club’s board that he is free to leave Stamford Bridge during the upcoming summer transfer window. The news comes as the club looks to trim down its squad, with manager Graham Potter eager to make changes ahead of next season.
According to the Sunday Mirror, Chelsea will be open to offers for Mendy this summer as they continue to evaluate their options in the transfer market.
The 31-year-old shot-stopper has not played for the club since November 2022, as he has been sidelined with a fractured finger which required surgery in January.
Mendy, who is a Senegal international, still has two years remaining on his current contract with Chelsea after having joined the club in September 2020 from French side Rennes. However, he turned down the Blues’ offer of a new deal earlier this season, which may have contributed to the board’s decision to allow him to leave.
Despite his injury troubles, Mendy has been a key player for Chelsea when he has been fit and available. He played a vital role in the club’s Champions League triumph and was also instrumental in their top-four finish in the Premier League.
It remains to be seen where Mendy will go next, with a number of top European clubs reportedly interested in his services. However, it is likely that Chelsea will demand a significant transfer fee for the goalkeeper given his pedigree and experience at the highest level of European football.
As the summer transfer window approaches, it will be interesting to see which clubs make a move for Mendy, and how Chelsea plan to reinvest any funds generated from his sale into strengthening their squad ahead of next season.
