Edward VIII, The King Who Sacrificed His Throne For His Lover

So many stories have been told about the crazy and unbelievable things humans do for love. One of such incredible stories is that of King Edward, who abdicated his throne and prestige to marry the woman he loved.

Background

Edward VIII (Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David) was king of the United Kingdom from the 20th of January, 1936 to 11th of December, 1936 after taking over from his Predecessor, George V.

He was the eldest son of King George V. He was known for his charming qualities and his love for parties and it was during one of his outings in 1931 that he met Mrs. Wallis Simpson, an American woman.

Relationship

Wallis and Edward soon bonded and their love for each other deepened over time. When King George V suddenly died, Edward was proclaimed King, and after that Mrs. Simpson filed for a divorce from her husband because Edward wanted to marry her. Edward’s intent sparked a lot of controversies and also incited a scandal in the society. Asides from the fact that an American couldn’t become Queen of England, the Church of England also forbade the marrying of a divorcee.

Reception

Many people frowned at the relationship between the two and some others vehemently accused Wallis of seducing the King.

The King’s intent met a huge opposition from the parliament as many ministers threatened to resign. However, he remained resolute in his decision and insisted that he couldn’t be king without her. His resolution prompted him to abdicate the throne, a decision that the royal family wasn’t pleased with.

Aftermath

After Edward’s controversial decision, his brother, Albert, became the King of England. Wallis and Edward tied the knot in 1937 and moved to France. However, their relationship with the Royal Family turned sour as a result of Edward’s decision.
