Edwin Clark
EKO HOT BLOG reports that elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark has said a new Constitution is the only way Nigeria can avert disintegration.
In a recent statement titled, ‘Majority of Nigerians believe in State Police because it is one Cardinal points or one of the ingredients in a Federal system of Government’, the leader of the Southern, Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF) who noted that truth and not lies are very essential in running a democratic government, stated that there was the need for proper guidance, survival and unity of the country.
“There is a need for proper guidance, survival and unity of the country. There is an urgent need to restructure this country and to have a new Constitution, produced by the people of Nigeria, as it was in 1963 when Nigerians negotiated for a Republican Constitution. Failure to do so will result in disintegration of this country, as a result of the serious insecurity all over the country,” Clark said.
The 1999 constitution of the Fourth Republic restored democratic rule to Nigeria and remains in force today.
In January 2011, two amendments of the 1999 constitution were signed by President Goodluck Jonathan, the first modifications since the document came into use in 1999. Still, calls for the constitution to be further amended or outrightly replaced have not ceased.
