The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has invited former Niger Delta militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, for questioning over allegations of naira abuse and financial misconduct.

Sources within the anti-graft agency confirmed on Wednesday that an invitation letter was delivered to Tompolo earlier in the week. According to one EFCC official, the invitation is a procedural step and not an arrest warrant, stating, “We expect his cooperation.”

EKO HOT BLOG reports that this action follows growing public backlash after a viral video surfaced online showing Tompolo at a birthday celebration believed to have taken place in April. In the video, he was seen dancing while bundles of ₦1,000 notes were being sprayed on him—an act prohibited under Nigerian law.

Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, 2007, explicitly forbids the spraying, dancing on, or mutilation of naira notes during social functions. Violators are liable to fines, imprisonment, or both.

The video, which gained traction on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), attracted strong criticism towards the EFCC, with many accusing the agency of applying double standards in its enforcement. While celebrities such as Bobrisky, E-Money, Iyabo Ojo, and comedian AY have faced prosecution for similar offences, Tompolo had until now remained untouched.

In response to public outcry, the EFCC issued a statement on Monday, insisting that the law would take its course. “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer,” the commission stated.

Although the full extent of the allegations remains undisclosed, the EFCC’s invitation is seen as a significant step in demonstrating that politically influential individuals are not beyond the reach of the law.
