Gunshots erupted at the Kogi State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja on Wednesday night as operatives from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) attempted to execute a search warrant related to former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that prior to the shooting, Ohiare Michael, Director of Bello’s Media Office, alleged that the EFCC had made a fresh attempt to arrest the former governor. Michael stated that Bello had voluntarily gone to the commission earlier that day for questioning but was told to leave and return later.

“It has come to our notice that individuals suspected to be EFCC operatives are currently at the Kogi Government Lodge in Asokoro, attempting to forcefully arrest former Governor Yahaya Bello,” Michael claimed. “They were shooting sporadically.”
Michael questioned why the EFCC did not interrogate Bello when he appeared at their office earlier in the day. “Tonight’s actions were unnecessary, as the former governor made himself available for questioning,” he said. “The EFCC had no questions for Alh. Yahaya Bello in the morning, yet now they are trying to arrest him.”
In response, the EFCC labeled Bello’s claim of honoring their invitation as false, but the commission has yet to release an official statement regarding the raid on the lodge.
Michael condemned the EFCC’s actions, suggesting they were politically motivated rather than part of a genuine anti-corruption effort. “This reflects more than just the fight against corruption,” he asserted. “We will keep Nigerians informed.”
The incident has sparked controversy and raised questions about the EFCC’s tactics and the motivations behind the attempted arrest of the former governor.
As developments unfold, both the EFCC and Bello’s team are expected to clarify the events that transpired, putting the commission’s actions under scrutiny.
