EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has responded to Zamfara State Governor Bello Matawalle’s claims that the chairman of the commission, Abdulrasheed Bawa, demanded a $2 million bribe from him.
The EFCC has criticized the governor’s allegations, stating that he lacks evidence to support his claims.
Governor Matawalle, who is currently under investigation for alleged corruption, made the accusations against Bawa during an interview with BBC Hausa. The governor asserted that he was being targeted because he refused to comply with the EFCC chairman’s supposed demand for the substantial sum of money.
However, the EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, issued a statement on Friday night refuting the governor’s claims and highlighting the lack of credibility in his allegations.
Uwujaren stated, “Matawalle’s recourse to mudslinging is symptomatic of a drowning man clutching at straws. But despite the irritation of his phantom claims, the Commission will not be drawn into a mud fight with a suspect under its investigation for corruption and unconscionable pillage of the resources of his state.”
Uwujaren further emphasized that Governor Matawalle must provide concrete evidence to substantiate his allegations if he wishes to be taken seriously.
The EFCC spokesperson urged the governor to move beyond mere accusations and present tangible proof to support his claims against Chairman Bawa.
The exchange of allegations between Governor Matawalle and the EFCC has brought forth a clash of credibility and has cast a cloud of doubt over the governor’s accusations. As the investigation into the governor’s alleged corruption continues, the EFCC remains steadfast in its commitment to maintaining professionalism and upholding the integrity of its investigations.
Governor Matawalle’s accusations against Chairman Bawa have generated significant attention, prompting stakeholders and the public to closely monitor the situation.
The outcome of this dispute and the governor’s ability to substantiate his claims will undoubtedly impact the public’s perception of both the EFCC and the governor himself.
As the investigation proceeds, it remains to be seen whether Governor Matawalle can provide concrete evidence to support his allegations or if the EFCC’s steadfast denial will further undermine his credibility.
The unfolding developments will undoubtedly shape the ongoing probe and have implications for the political landscape in Zamfara State.
