EFCC Sets To Peel Back The Veil On Zamfara State Governor

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially announced that an investigation is underway into the alleged involvement of Zamfara State governor, Bello Matawalle, in a massive N70 billion fraud.

The anti-graft agency also confirmed that former Minister of Power, Sale Mamman, who was recently arrested over an alleged N22 billion fraud, remains in detention pending further investigation.

Chairman of the EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa, addressed the press during a briefing, responding to the recent allegations made by Governor Matawalle and urging Nigerians not to be swayed by his remarks. The commission’s Director of Public Affairs, Osita Nwajah, relayed Bawa’s statement, clarifying that the EFCC was not obliged to dignify Matawalle with a response but chose to do so in order to set the record straight.

Nwajah stated, “It is intriguing that Matawalle would want to take on the role of a supervisor, who tells the EFCC whom to investigate. Is this a case of a ‘thief’ saying he must not be touched until other ‘thieves’ are caught? Unfortunately, it is not within Matawalle’s remit to dictate to the EFCC whom to arrest, when and where.”

The EFCC representative emphasized that the Commission’s custody facility houses suspects from various sectors and social classes solely based on their alleged involvement in criminal activities. Nwajah emphasized that the qualification for detention at the EFCC is the commission of a crime, regardless of one’s position or status, including priests, Imams, governors, or ministers.

Furthermore, the EFCC pointed out that a former Minister of Power is currently in their custody, facing corruption allegations involving N22 billion. The agency highlighted the fact that Governor Matawalle conveniently did not raise concerns about this specific case, suggesting potential bias in his statements.

The EFCC reiterates its commitment to conducting thorough investigations and ensuring that individuals involved in fraudulent activities face the full weight of the law. The agency affirms its independence and dedication to upholding justice, aiming to combat corruption and promote accountability in public offices.

This official statement from the EFCC comes in response to Governor Matawalle’s recent call for the commission to investigate outgoing members of President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet. While Matawalle’s allegations have drawn attention, the EFCC asserts its autonomy and determination to enforce the law impartially.
