EFL Cup Results As Spurs, Leeds Crash Out In Dramatic Fashion

on

Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of ending a 14-year trophy drought took a hit when they were defeated by Fulham in the second round of the EFL Cup. Meanwhile, Brentford narrowly escaped a challenge from Newport County in League Two. Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Wolves, and Luton Town all progressed comfortably to the third round.

In a London derby held at Craven Cottage, Tottenham’s new recruit Micky van de Ven unintentionally scored an own goal, providing Fulham with the lead.

However, Richarlison managed to level the score in the second half, leading the game to a penalty shootout.

Fulham secured their advancement with a 5-3 victory in the penalty shootout, with defender Davinson Sanchez missing the crucial spot kick.

Brentford believed they had an 87th-minute winner from Mathias Jensen against Newport County, but Kiban Rai equalized nine minutes later, deep into added time.

In his debut, Brentford’s Ellery Balcombe impressed by saving two penalties, leading the Bees to a 3-0 shootout win and progress.

In another entertaining encounter, Wolves netted five goals against Blackpool without any reply, providing manager Gary O’Neil with a boost of confidence ahead of the upcoming weekend.

Matt Doherty, shortly after his return to the club, notched two goals, and Sasa Kalajdzic found the net for the second consecutive game. Additionally, Fabio Silva and 18-year-old Nathan Fraser also added to the scoreline.

Meanwhile, Wolves’ Premier League rivals this week, Crystal Palace, had a comfortable 4-2 victory over Plymouth Argyle, thanks to a hat-trick by Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Luton also secured a 3-2 win against Gillingham in their first home game of the season.
