The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) has issued a warning, predicting a potential surge in the cost of eggs, possibly reaching ₦10,000 per crate, should measures not be taken to mitigate the escalating fuel prices across the country.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that attributing the burgeoning cost of eggs to heightened transportation expenses and arbitrary hikes in feed prices by millers, Musa Hakeem, the Secretary of PAN’s FCT Chapter, communicated these concerns during a press briefing held to mark World Egg Day in Abuja.

Emphasizing the need for urgent government intervention, Hakeem stressed the imperative of declaring a state of emergency in egg production due to a significant decline in protein consumption. He underscored the necessity for Nigeria to reduce dependence on egg imports.

“While a proportional adjustment in response to these factors would lead to a cost of ₦10,000 per crate, we have maintained the current price at N5,500, considering the significance of eggs to public health,” remarked Hakeem.

Furthermore, he cautioned that the current trend indicates a potential future spike to ₦6,000 for protein prices, driven by the continuous rise in poultry feed costs.

Expressing disappointment in the absence of government support, Hakeem cited a lack of grain interventions over the past three years. He urged the government to involve PAN in their relief efforts, highlighting their comprehensive database of poultry farmers in the FCT.

Lamenting the negligence of the poultry subsector over time, Hakeem urged greater government attention, expressing concerns about the industry’s future if support remains lacking. He implored for collaborative efforts to prevent a possible collapse of the sector.
