Despite a potential penalty for Nigeria in the 72nd minute after Mendos Richson was fouled, the Video Assistant Referee overturned the decision, keeping the scoreline unchanged. In the final moments of the game, Nigerian goalkeeper Ifeanyi Harcourt made a crucial save to deny Tunisia’s Ben Ali from a close-range attempt, sealing the win for the Flying Eagles.
This victory marked Nigeria’s fourth win in six encounters with Tunisia at the U20 level, a history dating back to 1981 when Nigeria triumphed 4-0 in a FIFA World Youth Championship qualifier in Australia. Tunisia responded with a 4-1 victory in the return leg but Nigeria progressed to the final round.
In 1985, the two teams drew 1-1 in Tunis during the African U20 Championship final, but Nigeria clinched the title with a 2-1 win in the return match in Lagos. More recently, two years ago, Nigeria defeated Tunisia 4-0 to claim third place in the Africa U20 Cup of Nations in Egypt.
