EDITOR’S PICK:

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) has reiterated its continuous commitment to general cleanliness, just as it solicited environmental consciousness among Lagosians during the forthcoming Eid-El-Kabir festival.

The Corps Marshal of the Agency, CP Gbemisola Akinpelu (rtd.), made the call at the Agency’s Command Headquarters, Bolade-Oshodi on Thursday in Lagos, saying “The Sallah holidays are here and we enjoin Lagosians to celebrate peacefully, sort and recycle their waste for proper disposal by the approved PSPs as part of measures to be self-conscious about the cleanliness of their environment”.

Akinpelu cautioned Lagosians against dropping refuse on roadsides and in drains and gutters as it constitutes indiscriminate dumping, which is punishable under the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law 2017.

Highlighting the impediment caused by street trading and hawking to vehicular and human movements in the State, Akinpelu affirmed that street trading remains banned in Lagos and admonished those engaged in the practice to cease and desist from the illegal behaviour.

She also enjoined pedestrians to consider their safety by making appropriate use of strategically-erected pedestrian bridges across the State to avoid being knocked down by speeding motorists on major highways.

The Corps Marshal also revealed that LAGESC operatives will remain on duty during the Sallah holidays in a renewed bid to achieve the Agency’s mandate of a Cleaner and Greener Environment in Lagos State.
