Ekiti State Government has started the demolition of 532 primary schools with old structures across the state with the plan of replacing them with modern structures.

The State Universal Basic Education Board Chairman, Prof. Femi Akinwumi, made this known on Monday.

He said apart from ensuring the safety of the pupils, the new structures would add aesthetic values to the schools in line with Governor Kayode Fayemi’s beautification projects and rid the school environment of miscreants.

Akinwumi spoke at Mount Mary Nursery/Primary School, Oke Ila, Ado Ekiti, while flagging off the demolition exercise, saying it was conceptualised by the Fayemi administration to give way for the construction of new buildings across primary schools in the state.

He said, “Under this programme, all mud blocks and dilapidated structures must go down. We have to checkmate all the miscreants that are using those dilapidated buildings in all our primary schools as hideouts, because we are aware some people use these places as abodes.

“At present, we are training about 761 new teachers, which is a follow up to over 2,700 teachers that had been trained in 2020. We are giving a conducive environment and really enhancing the capacities of our personnel.”

The SUBEB boss commended the Universal Basic Education Commission for collaborating to uplift basic education in Ekiti State, particularly with the payment of N7.6bn counterpart funding by the state government.
