Ekiti Monarchs Warn of Invoking Yoruba Deities to Combat Kidnappers
Eko Hot Blog reports that Ekiti state monarchs have issued a stern warning, threatening to invoke traditional measures, including the intervention of Yoruba gods, to counter the rising menace of kidnappers terrorizing the state.
This declaration comes in the wake of recent attacks in the South-West region, where criminals have unleashed havoc, resulting in fatalities, including the tragic killing of two Ekiti monarchs.

The Onimojo of Imojo, Oba Olatunde Olusola, and the Elesun of Esun Ekiti, Oba Babatunde Ogunsakin, were killed in an ambush by kidnappers while returning from a function in Kogi State. The Alara of Ara Ekiti, Oba Adebayo Fatoba, narrowly escaped a similar fate.
The state’s traditional rulers are now contemplating resorting to traditional methods, including invoking the Yoruba gods, to combat the escalating insecurity.
The Chairman of Ekiti State Traditional Council and the Olojudo of Ido Ekiti, Oba Ayorinde Ilori-Faboro, emphasized that the council is exploring various avenues to address the security crisis, though specific tactics were not disclosed.
“Any solution is acceptable; we will approach our problem with every possible solution,” stated Oba Faboro.
A former chairman of the traditional council and the Owa Ooye of Okemesi Ekiti, Oba Michael Adedeji, echoed the sentiment, advocating for the adoption of traditional methods to ensure peace and order.
He stressed the need for empowerment of traditional rulers to take charge of local security and fortification.
“The government has to empower the traditional rulers to do all they want to secure their communities. This will include local security and fortification,” Oba Adedeji asserted.
The killing of the two monarchs has prompted a reevaluation of the role of traditional practices in safeguarding communities. Monarchs in the region lamented the abandonment of traditional coronation rites, emphasizing the need to revive these practices for the protection of rulers and communities.
In response to the security challenge, the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, called for financial empowerment of traditional rulers, entrusting them with the responsibility of providing security for their communities.
