Ekiti Police Debunk Killing 2 FUOYE Students

The Nigeria Police Force, Ekiti State Command has debunked the story doing rounds the public that its officers shot and killed two students of the Federal University of Oye Ekiti ( FUOYE) during the protest the students of the university embarked on yesterday.

It will be recalled that, the students of FUOYE embarked on a protest yesterday because of poor power supply in the university community. The protest, however turned violent as the irate students attacked the convoy of the wife of the governor of the state, Mrs Bisi Fayemi who was in the community for empowerment programme.

In the process and in a bid to rescue the first lady and members of her entourage from the unhealthy development, it was reported that, the police allegedly shot to the crowd of protesting students, resulting to the death of two of them.

However, in a release made available to journalists by the Force Public Relation Officers, DSP Caleb Ikechukwu, the Police debunked the allegation and described the story baseless and unfounded with the intention to incite and create panic in the state

The statement read:

“Ekiti state police command is using this medium to debunk the story making rounds on social media that , the police shot at protesting students of Federal University Oye Ekiti State. The story is baseless, unfounded and only intends to incite and create panic in the minds of peace loving people of Ekiti State and the general public.

“The students of Federal University Oye/Ikole Campus led by their student Union Government simultaneously embarked on a protest against the total blackout in both campuses.

“The protesting students took to the Federal High way away from the perimeter wall of University and Blocked the Oye-Ikole-Lokoja Federal Roads, their by causing the breach of Peace and grid lock to motorist plying that route.

“The protesting students also invaded the office of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) in Oye Ekiti.

“It took the quick intervention of policemen deployed to the scene to prevent further damage of the office complex.

“The Police Officers at the scene pacified with the protesting students, removed the blockade and dispersed the protesting student peacefully.

“However,the protesting students turned around in their numbers and took their plight to Her Excellence, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, the Wife of the Executive Governor of Ekiti State who was at an empowerment program.

“The protesting Students suddenly became unruly, hostile and took laws into their hands, also vandalized the motorcade of her excellency.

“The protesting students did not stop at that, they also assaulted the policemen who where at the scene to maintain law and order and damaged Police Vehicle
found at the Scene.

“Investigation is ongoing to bring the perpetrator to book. Further statement will be issued in due cause”
