The couple were inducted as patron and patroness of the club on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at the Eko Club International’s second quarterly general meeting of 2024 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Eko Club of Pennsylvania, a chapter of Eko Club International (ECI), an umbrella body for Lagosians in the diaspora, hosted the meeting which featured various activities, including an all-white party, community outreach, and a banquet.
The club also appointed Dr. Lanre Ojo, who was the ECI president from 2017 to 2021, as its grand patron.
‘The Agunloye’s Have a Track Record of Excellence’
In an interview with Eko Hot Blog, Prince Adewale Dosunmu, the President of the Eko Club of Pennsylvania, said the club appointed the Agunloye couple after a painstaking process that took into account their antecedents.
Prince Dosunmu told our correspondent that Dr. Agunloye and Hon. Agunloye presented “impressive resumés of accomplishments and involvement in communities and social organizations.”
“Those are some of the reasons why they were chosen and that was the reason why the induction took place,” he said.
“The first woman we inducted was Dr. Caroline Agunloye. Dr. Agunloye is a medical practitioner and president of one of the thriving chapters which is Eko Club International, San Antonio and she has an impeccable record of giving and supporting charitable organizations.
“Secondly was the induction of Hon. Kolapo Sijuade Agunloye who happens to be the husband of Dr. Caroline Agunloye. Both of them came to us with impeccable records of giving and philanthropic gestures to various organizations.
“They have supported most of these organizations with financial resources and valuable advice and everything they have to give to make the organizations better.
“These are some of the reasons that made us decide to honour Hon. Agunloye with the position of one of the patrons of our organization.”
‘Dr. Larry Ojo Has a Record of Giving and Service’
The Eko Club of Pennsylvania told Eko Hot Blog that Dr. Ojo was also honoured with the title of grand patron due to his “record of giving, record of service and record of consistent service to Eko Club International.”
He also noted that the former ECI president was instrumental in the creation of the social club in Pennsylvania.
“He was at one time president of Eko Club International and as such is one of the presidents emeritus that we have in our organization,” Prince Dosunmu said.
“Apart from that, we honoured him because we believe that as at the time we took that decision, there wasn’t anybody that was more qualified to be in that position than Dr. Lanre Ojo.
“The formation of our organization was not without him. His input, his advice, his leadership role, gave rise to the formation of Eko Club of Pennsylvania and he has been with us ever since that time with advice, with support and monetary value that have helped us steady the ship of governance of club up till today.
“These qualities qualified him to be the grand patron of Eko Club of Pennsylvania.”
Why Eko Club of Pennsylvania Appointed a Grand Patron, Patron, and Patroness
Prince Dosunmu told Eko Hot Blog that the appointment of the grand patron, patron, and patroness was in line with the tradition of Nigerian social clubs choosing advisers.
He said the Eko Club of Pennsylvania appointed Dr. Ojo, Dr. Agunloye, and Hon. Agunloye as grand patron, patroness, and patron, respectively, so that they could act as advisers and pillars of financial support.
“As is tradition, social clubs in Nigeria always look for patrons and patronesses,” the Eko Club of Pennsylvania president told our reporter.
“The major function of these people is to be advisers and pillars of financial support.
