  • Sentence

A Kwara High Court sitting in Ilorin on Thursday sentenced a 28-year-old electrician, Oyeniran Olamilekan, to six months in prison over offences bordering on internet fraud and romance scam.

Olamilekan was prosecuted on a one-count charge by the Ilorin Zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The charge against him reads: “That you, Oyeniran Olamilekan (Mike Johnson), sometime between June 2020, in Ilorin, cheated by personification, when you pretended to be Mike Johnson, a white female, with gmail account mikejohnson2058@gmail.com.

“Fraudulently deceived one Bill Irvin to send $1,100 to you through gift cards, after you made him believe you were a girl in love with him.

“Thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 321 of the Penal Code and punishable under Section 324 of the same law.”

Oyeniran pleaded guilty on Feb. 15, when he was arraigned by the EFCC.

The facts of the case were reviewed by the commission and the court adjourned the case for judgment.

The presiding Judge, Justice Adenike Akinpelu, while delivering judgment, said that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubts.

Akinpelu said “the defendant is hereby convicted as charged.

“The convict is hereby sentenced to six months imprisonment with an option of fine, in the sum of N300,000″.

The judge said that a draft of N180,000 brought by the convict as restitution and the phone recovered from him, being the instrument used in perpetrating the crime, should be forfeited to the Federal Government.
