A somber start to the New Year unfolded in Lagos as an electrician, identified simply as Sheni, tragically lost his life after being electrocuted while working on a high-tension wire. The incident occurred on January 1, 2025, at the Unilag Estate in the Magodo area of Lagos.

According to eyewitnesses, Sheni had been hired by a resident of the estate to carry out wiring connections on an electricity pole. However, the repair was reportedly done without notifying or involving the local electricity distribution company.

A resident, speaking anonymously, revealed, “He was not a staff member of any electricity distribution company. The repairs were carried out independently, which may have contributed to the unfortunate incident.”

Emergency responders, including the Anti-Crime Patrol team from Isheri Division, fire service personnel, and the Lagos State Ambulance Services, swiftly arrived at the scene. Despite their efforts, Sheni was confirmed dead at the site after his lifeless body was retrieved from the pole.

Authorities have since moved the deceased’s body to the mortuary, with efforts underway to identify and notify his family members.

The tragic incident has sparked renewed conversations about the risks of unauthorized electrical work and the need for adherence to safety protocols when dealing with high-voltage equipment.

Residents in the area expressed their condolences and called for heightened awareness to prevent such occurrences. Many have urged the government and electricity distribution companies to enforce stricter regulations around electrical repairs and to educate the public on the dangers of engaging unqualified personnel.

This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the importance of prioritizing safety in electrical repairs, especially when dealing with high-tension connections.
