The event was part of activities marking the king’s 20th coronation anniversary and his 80th birthday.
The week-long celebrations, which started on January 5 and ended on January 12, 2025, showcased the king’s dedication to his community thus revealing the rich culture of Ejinrin Kingdom.
The ceremonial activities began with a thanksgiving ceremony, followed by traditional rites, chieftaincy title conferments, free medical services for residents, and a community event showcasing the Apo masquerade.
The Apo masquerade, an ancestral symbol in Ejinrin’s history, is known for its unique sack-like costume and is traditionally displayed every four years.
In a chat with Ekohotblog, Oba Rafiu Ishola Babatunde explained the importance of the Apo masquerade and his efforts to revive its traditional rites.
He admitted that it had not been displayed as often as it should be and promised to honour the tradition moving forward.
“This masquerade is unlike any other. It has been part of our history since the time of my forefathers. I’ve apologized for not displaying it as often as required and pledged to ensure it is paraded at the proper times,” the king said.
He added that the Apo masquerade is a symbol of blessings and brings joy to the community.
