How Elephant Killed 23-Year-Old Tourist During Bath In Thailand
A “panic-stricken” elephant killed a Spanish tourist while she was bathing the animal at a sanctuary in southern Thailand, police reported on Monday.
The 23-year-old woman was struck by the elephant’s trunk at the Koh Yao Elephant Care Centre in Phang Nga province, according to local authorities.

“A female tourist was killed while bathing an elephant,” said Jaran Bangprasert, the local police chief, in a statement to AFP.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that authorities have contacted the Spanish embassy to verify the victim’s identity.
The sanctuary declined to provide further details when reached by AFP.
In the past 12 years, wild elephants have killed 227 people, including tourists, according to the Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation.
In December, an elephant killed a 49-year-old woman at a national park in Loei province, located in northern Thailand.
While conflicts between villagers and wild elephants are common, attacks in sanctuaries are rare.
Bathing elephants is a popular activity for tourists in Thailand, where around 2,800 elephants are held for tourism purposes, according to World Animal Protection.

However, animal rights groups argue that such activities can distress the elephants, and some sanctuaries in Thailand prohibit them.
