Legendary singer-songwriter Elton John has disclosed that a severe eye infection he contracted over the summer left him unable to attend previews of his latest musical, The Devil Wears Prada.
Despite the setback, the 77-year-old assured fans that his involvement in the project remains strong, as he praised the production’s audio elements during a London charity gala performance.
“I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because, as you know, I have lost my eyesight,” John shared candidly with the audience. “It’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it and, boy, it sounded good tonight.”
The Rocket Man star had previously addressed his health challenges on Instagram in September, revealing that the infection had left him with limited vision in one eye.
He later elaborated in an interview with ABC News, explaining that he temporarily lost sight in his right eye while his left eye remains compromised.
“I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye,” John wrote in his social media update.
The Grammy-winning artist, who concluded his illustrious touring career with a farewell tour spanning 2022 and 2023, continues to stay active in the music and entertainment industry.
His final UK performance was a standout at the Glastonbury Festival, followed by his last-ever live show in Sweden.
The Devil Wears Prada, a musical adaptation of the iconic 2006 film, features music composed by John.
Vanessa Williams stars as the imperious fashion editor Miranda Priestly, a role she described as deeply collaborative.
“I said I wanted to be a part of it because I could create the role and that means you’re informing the script, the music, the choreography, all the action,” Williams told the press.
The star-studded Sunday gala was attended by prominent figures in the fashion world, including Anna Wintour and Donatella Versace, underscoring the musical’s glamorous appeal.
