EPL: Emerson Palmieri Explains Reasons For Rejecting Chelsea Recall

Emerson Palmieri, Chelsea defender has revealed that he rejected the chance to return to Chelsea during the January transfer window as he “promised” Lyon that he would finish the season at the Ligue 1 club.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that the 27-year-old has been an important player for Lyon during the 2021-22 campaign, making 23 appearances in all competitions, having joined the French side on loan last June.
Palmieri is currently on loan at French Ligue 1 side Lyon from Chelsea.
Chelsea sought to cancel Palmieri’s season-long loan deal with Lyon in January after losing Ben Chilwell to injury but failed to recall the Italy international.

While Lyon refused to sanction the move, Palmieri was reluctant to push for a return to Chelsea as the January transfer window eventually closed.
However, Emerson said he refused to return to Chelsea in January because he made a promise to Lyon sporting director, Juninho, that he would stay at the club until the end of his loan deal.
“I didn’t go back to Chelsea because I promised [Lyon sporting director] Juninho that I would stay for a season,” Palmieri told Lyon’s official website.
“I am a man of my word. I like being in Lyon, I want to be here.
“For next season, it’s difficult to say because it depends on the clubs, but I am happy here.”
Recall that Chelsea requested to withdraw Emerson Palmieri from his loan at Lyon REJECTED’, with Thomas Tuchel eager to secure cover for injured Ben Chilwell.
The Blues recently tried to bring the 27-year-old back from his loan early, only to see that request turned down by the French outfit.
Emerson meanwhile extended his stay at Stamford Bridge until 2023 before heading out on loan to France.
The 27-year-old has enjoyed a successful loan spell at Lyon in the first half of this season, scoring once in 15 Ligue 1 appearances, but was sent off in the 1-1 draw with Saint-Etienne in October.
Emerson meanwhile has made 71 appearances for Chelsea, scoring twice, since joining from Roma in January 2018.
