When erstwhile President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office on May 29, 2015, one of the things he first did was go after members of the Goodluck Jonathan administration, with the National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki, feeling the heat of Buhari’s venom.
The initial arrest of Dasuki was met with accolades for Buhari, especially on the media trial of the $2.1bn meant from the purchase of arms.
EDITOR’S PICKS
In a bold display of authority, President Bola Tinubu wasted no time in making his mark upon assuming office. The first stroke of his pen came down with resounding force, suspending the former CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, in an instant.
The subsequent arrest by the Department of State Services (DSS) sent shockwaves through the political landscape. For those well-versed in the intricate dance of Nigeria’s politics, it became abundantly clear that Emefiele was embarking on a treacherous journey fraught with obstacles and uncertainty. This is the beginning of the end for him.
In the democratic landscape, the rule of law stands tall as the bedrock of justice and equality. It serves as a powerful reminder that no individual, regardless of their stature or influence, is exempt from its reach. Presently, Nigeria stands at a crossroads as the detained Emefiele becomes a litmus test of President Bola Tinubu’s unwavering dedication to upholding the principles of justice. It is crucial for President Tinubu to heed the call for fairness, transparency, and justice in handling this case, not only to protect Emefiele’s rights but also to safeguard the very essence and integrity of Nigeria’s democracy.
Forgetting the many failed policies of the Buhari administration, which had Emefiele as the face, one can easily point to the ill-thought-out Naira redesign policy months before the 2023 general elections as his fatal sin against Tinubu.
The timing was so wrong that protests broke out across the country as Nigerians who had money stuck in banks couldn’t access their funds – throwing different spanners in the wheel of Asiwaju’s stride to the presidency. It was so plain that Tinubu addressed the failed naira redesign policy at a presidential rally in Ogun State, Abeokuta. For him, that was an unforgivable sin and an attempt that would have stopped him from achieving his life-long dream.
As the case against Godwin Emefiele unravels, the imperative lies with President Tinubu to uphold a just and unbiased legal process. It is vital that Emefiele be granted the opportunity to mount a strong defense, presenting evidence and witnesses to support his cause.

Through unwavering adherence to due process, President Tinubu would underscore the principle that no one should face arbitrary detention or unjust treatment. By embracing the rule of law, President Tinubu would fortify Nigeria’s democratic fabric, safeguarding individual rights and setting a guiding precedent for future leaders to emulate.
