Emmanuel Ifeajuna was the first black African to win a gold medal in Commonwealth Games and then reviled for his part in Nigeria’s civil war.
He had his record breaking victory in high jump at the 1954 Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver with just one shoe on his foot.
It was reported after attaining this victory he got involved in politics where he co-led a military coup in January 1966.
He was later alleged to have shot and killed Nigeria’s first prime minister. The coup failed through and he eventually escaped to Ghana by dressing as a woman. 20months later, Emmanuel came back to fight for Biafra during the Civil War.
He was later accused with three other officers by Late Ojukwu of plotting coup against him, a treasonable offence which he denied.
He was executed publicly with a deafening volley of gun shots and had his head lolled on his rigid body.
