There is currently palpable apprehension in Lagos as armed hoodlums invade EndSARS protest ground to disrupt demonstration.
There has been protest across major towns and cities in the country over police brutality and call for dissolution of special anti-robbery squad (SARS).
SARS is a controversial unit under the Nigerian police, it is notorious for all manner of nefarious action. Men of the unit extort, harass, intimidate, arbitrarily arrest and, in many cases, engage in extrajudicial killing of young people.
Though there have been pockets of violence during the protest but the demonstration has been largely peaceful in most part.
But protesters were confronted with a shocking reality on Thursday which marks the protest seventh as cutlass-brandishing, dagger-wielding and gun-toting hoodlums storm the protest ground in Alausa, the seat of Lagos state government, in Ikeja, the state capital.
Protesters who were just converging for the day’s demonstration had to scamper for safety as the hoodlums hound them.
The hoodlums are allegedly deployed by the state government because they were conveyed to protest ground by the state government public transport bus.
