Enugu Govt In Chaos As Mbah Orders Freezing Of All Govt Accounts

• The governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, has ordered the freezing of all government bank accounts in the state until further notice.

• Furthermore, former political appointees have been directed to comply with an earlier directive and hand over all government assets in their possession.

• The affected categories of political appointees include former CEOs of government-owned companies, board chairmen and members of government-owned companies, and others listed in the memo issued by the former Secretary to the State Government.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, the governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, ordered that all government bank accounts in the state be frozen until further notice.

The directive was contained in a statement signed by Professor Chidiebere Onyia, the Secretary to the State Government.

The statement directed that the freezing of government accounts should take effect immediately.

The statement read, “Following the directive given by the Enugu State Governor to freeze all government accounts in all the banks in Enugu State, I hereby, direct that all Enugu State Government accounts be frozen with immediate effect, till further notice.”

Furthermore, the government also directed former political appointees and office holders in the previous administration to comply with an earlier directive issued by the former Secretary to the State Government, Professor Simeon Otuanya.

The directive required them to hand over all government assets in their possession on or before May 26, 2023, ahead of the expiration of the past administration’s second tenure.

In another statement signed by Professor Onyia, the government instructed all affected individuals to comply immediately with the directive by handing over the government assets in their possession to the Permanent Secretary, Director of Administration, or Director of Personnel Management in their respective Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) before the close of work on Wednesday, May 31, 2023.

The categories of political appointees affected by the directive include former Chief Executive Officers of Government-Owned Companies, Board Chairmen and Members of Government-Owned Companies, Executive Secretaries of Parastatals or Government-Owned Companies, State Project Coordinators of World Bank-Assisted Projects, and other categories of political appointees listed in the memo issued by the former Secretary to the State Government in the past administration.
