On Sunday, a viral video circulated, showing residents raising concerns about the abduction of several students from the college since Wednesday evening. The video also criticized authorities for their perceived lack of response to the incident.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that gunmen, suspected to be herdsmen, entered the school complex around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday and abducted the students.
In a statement released on Saturday night, police spokesperson DSP Daniel Ndukwe confirmed the kidnapping, stating that two of the students had been rescued while three others remain missing. Ndukwe refuted the claims in the viral video that a large number of students had been abducted, labeling it as “false” and an attempt to “mislead and create panic.”
The statement read: “Contrary to the false narrative in the viral video, police operatives at the Oji-River Division received information about an abduction at the college on the evening of August 15, 2024. They swiftly responded, rescuing two of the victims, with three still unaccounted for. Efforts are underway to locate and rescue the remaining students and apprehend the kidnappers.”
Ndukwe explained that the preliminary investigation indicates the victims were leaving the college when the abduction occurred.
The Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has directed that every effort be made to rescue the missing students and apprehend the perpetrators. He also warned against spreading misleading social media narratives that could create unnecessary panic and hinder police operations.
