The incident occurred on the Berger bridge connecting Ibeju-Lekki to Epe town.
In the video that has gone viral on social media, the recorder could be seen moving closer to the confused-looking boy, asking about his name and what was wrong with him. He further asked passers-by who had gathered on the bridge if anyone could identify him.
While the recorder of the scene might want to be blamed for not rescuing the boy, it later turned out that he was also scheming to get closer to the boy, using the questions being asked to buy time, so that he could be rescued.
Sadly, the tactics failed as the boy eventually jumped into the lagoon while the helpless recorder and a few passersby moved closer.
From the video, a distraught woman could be heard lamenting why the recorder was not swift enough to rescue the boy. The recorder responded that he did all he could but to no avail. The woman, therefore, pleaded to get local divers around to rescue him.
Information gathered in town from a source close to the family has it that the victim, whose elder sister died recently, was a drug addict. It was said that he’d pose a threat to his siblings and neighbours with bottles and knives.
It was also gathered that all efforts to rehabilitate the victim, who already has a year old child, proved abortive before he finally decided to take his own life.
This online media platform reports that prior to the suicide, another man, a father of 4, had jumped into the lagoon around November.
It was gathered that family members launched a search and rescue for him and was later found lifeless by the riverside after 3 days.
However, these two ugly incidents within the space of 2 months call for serious concern.
The Epe Berger bridge is fast becoming a suicide point and it is therefore important for concerned authorities at both the local and state level to work in synergy with security agencies to safeguard the axis.
