The President of Epe Club, Engineer Rasheed Adebola Shabi, has absolved the government from the myriad of security challenges bedevilling Nigeria.
The Environmental Safety engineer disclosed this to Ekohotblog in an interview on the sideline of the Club’s Annual Ramadan Lecture tagged ” The Role of Religion in Achieving Stable and Secured Environment”.
“It is not the government, don’t get me wrong. It is we the parents. A child who studied education in the university must go into teaching. But that child wouldn’t want to teach because there’s no money in teaching. He would want to walk in the Bank or big Multinational company looking for money “.
Engineer Shabi amongst many things singled out deviation from religious beliefs, norms and sentiments as the root causes of insecurity in the Nation, noting that parents/guardians have abandoned their primary responsibilities on their wards. This, he said has facilitated the menace of kidnapping amongst young people for the sole purpose of getting money compared to what was obtainable in his days.
” In those days, when we were being raised in the Islamic way, we were made to understand that what you don’t work for will never last in your hand. But today, our children don’t understand that. They believe I can make money by kidnapping and demanding NGN10 Million Ransome”, he stated.
Speaking further, the certified Chemical Engineer slammed parents for aiding and abetting criminal acts by their children particularly in the aspect of living a life of luxury without having a well-paid job. He also identified the rot in the academics as a criminal collaborative effort of both the parents, their children and the teachers/lecturers in a bid to cut corners.
” Your children will come home and tell you “We want to settle Lecturers” when it’s time for school cert exams, you tell your parents you want to have special centres.
Your child will come home with a Lexus Jeep, Range Rover without working and parents won’t ask “Where did you get that money from?”.
While the newly installed Epe Club President lamented that the parents have failed a generation, he thought that there should be a conscious effort to revert to the old era where children are brought up according to the dictates of their faiths.

” That culture and tradition are gone, we need to bring it back. Parents should care to ask. If you didn’t buy an iPhone 12 for your child, ask. We must start learning to do handworks. If you don’t get a job, go and start sewing. Our parents will tell you “remember the child of whom you are”, but today, who cares about the family name?”, he questioned.
He, therefore, disclosed that most youths are not the true reflection of their university degrees, a scenario which exposes their incompetence and thereby fuels large scale unemployment crises in the country. This, he backed up, with the story of a Biochemistry graduate who couldn’t answer the mass number of calcium.
He also posited that religious leaders have less role to play in securing their communities because lazy youths with dwindling fortunes having being involved in internet fraud, resort to large scale criminal acts.
