The foremost secondary school in Epe, Epe Senior Grammar School has emerged as the State champion of the Year 2020 Robotics State Finals Competition.
Lagos state commissioner for Education, Ms Folashade Adefisayo, disclosed this on Wednesday 24th March 2021, at an award ceremony.
The school defeated Birch Freeman and Ojo senior high schools who came second and third respectively.
Reacting to the development, Mr Obeda, the Principal of Epe Senior Grammar School was thankful for the developmental strides of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the education sector towards technological innovation drives in schools across the State.
He also appreciated the unwavering and relentless supports supervisory roles of the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Dr Mrs Folashade Adefisayo and the Education District 3 Tutor-General and Permanent Secretary, Dr Mrs Olufolayimika Ayandele. He, therefore, promised the Lagos State Government that the State champions will not rest on their oars until they emerge as National Champions.
The teacher in charge of coaching the students, Mrs Odunsi, said that she wasn’t surprised at the emergence of the school as State Champions as it wasn’t the first time of winning.
” I was not really surprised at the feat because we’ve been winning every year but most times, the State level isn’t celebrated. The competition is always fierce and keenly contested with two major schools because their coaches are senior tutors on Grade Level 17.
“I was trained in 2016 when the Lagos State Government newly introduced it to few schools in Lagos State. We’ve won this competition precisely in 2016 at the National level and we were supposed to travel out of the country to India but unfortunately, we couldn’t, we were given a commendation letter.
“Coaching robotics is a daunting task. We meet every day till late in the evening, including the weekends, at times the students miss their meals but I provide them with alternatives”, she stated.
Ms Odunsi told to Ekohotblog that her involvement in the competition had earned her the award of the Best Junior School Teacher both at the District level and the State level in 2017. The Computer Studies teacher also stated that the program had provided her with the rare opportunity of coaching teachers in District 3 on robotics.
” It was a great achievement for us because we were always embattled with many challenges and to see ourselves celebrated in such a way is astonishing” one of the team lead, Emmanuel Oludare, told Ekohotblog “Whenever those challenges weigh us down, we always have it at the back of our minds to never give up. Our watchwords have always been winners don’t quit, quitters don’t win”.
The competition was organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Education Department of Science and Technology.
The preparation for the competition began before the Nationwide lockdown and continued with the resumption of SS3 students. The Team Leads include Emmanuel Oludare, Odunsi Emmanuel and Andrew Meshach. Others are Oyeleke Ayomide, Akanni Ahmed, Nwawuihe Kelechi, Odofin Ibrahim, Eguda Frank and Shittu Aboladale.
