EPE LAHA 2023: Segun Agbaje Reacts To Allegations Of Mismanaging, Converting Govt Properties To Personal Use
-
Hon. Segun Agbaje has reacted to allegations of mismanaging and converting government properties to personal use.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that Hon Segun Agbaje, the former Chairman of Epe Local Government aspiring to fly the flag of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 Lagos State House of Assembly Elections for Epe Constituency I, has denied allegations of mismanaging and converting government properties to personal use.
In an interview with EKO HOT BLOG at the weekend, the former Association of Local Governments in Nigeria, ALGON, National Treasurer, Hon Agbaje, said the allegations are brought up to blackmail him.
He averred that his track records and robust credentials while in and out of office as Chairman were not only enviable enough to engender the change the people yearn but also unsettle any camp.
“When you are the only person capable of making a change at a particular period, the only one that has the record that can tackle and challenge whoever that is on the seat, people would look around to look at whatever information to dent your image or to blackmail you.”
“As a journalist, you know how to find out to get facts. The E-Library project was my initiative and the budget of the Local Government is there. There is no Generator attached and the only one I bought is the 150KVA Generator, it was the biggest in the history of Epe Local Government. I left it in a working condition and immediately I left, it was vandalised.”
“And how did they do that? After I left office in the second week, they leased that monumental multi-million Naira project that is a pride to the people of Epe, equipped with 120 HP brand Computer Systems with a dedicated server. The questions the good people of Epe should ask is, who let that place or rented or lease it out to a private Business Man, who converted it to a business Center?” he interrogated.
Speaking further, he challenged anyone who cares to unearth the ambivalence behind the allegations against him to visit the Local Government.
While he pointed out that the Council-Manager who is accountable to Government properties would be of help, he also maintained that he did nothing wrong by taking his properties before he left the moribund Local Government Chalet he upgraded while in office.
“They also mentioned the issue of Chalet which was not in use when I came on board. I had to rehabilitate and upgrade the place for me to stay so that I can be accessible to my people and when you are leaving office, you have to take your personal belongings. The Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, officials were on the ground to take the record and ascertain what I took with a hand-over note.
“So, if the place was not in use after I left office, I can’t be responsible. It is inhuman and if there’s anybody that has a shred of genuine evidence, I am ready to defend it. All my records of activities between 2008-2014, I have them. All records of contractors with the contract sum, address, I have them. This is because I keep records,” he boasted.
Hon Olusegun Agbaje also used the medium to clear the air on the conversion of Government-owned cars. He emphasised that his blackmailers were bereft of the workings of government, stating that the so-called cars were boarded; a window provided to shop government properties by public officeholders.
“They also mentioned the issue of cars. Let me also tell you that they reason this way because of lack of knowledge. There is what the Government call boarding of Government vehicles from the Lagos State Government to all Local Governments who have an interest in any car within their office as LG Chairman, Vice, Leader of the House, Supervisors and Councilors.
You have to pay a certain amount of money and you take it. The letters and records are there in the local Government office. So, if I am seen with a car that belongs to the Government, does that mean it is a stolen vehicle? It is a boarded car. All the councillors, the Vice-Chairman have theirs”
To back his claims, Segun Agbaje gave an instance of how he acquired 2 Compactors for refuse packing but it was boarded by the Lagos State Government while he was still the Chairman. “The only thing is that they brought a letter from Alausa that those two compactors have been boarded. There’s no evidence I can’t present to back up my claims,” submitted.
