Eko Hot Blog reports that, following the torrential downpour on Wednesday, July 3, that resulted in significant flooding in various parts of Lagos State, the Chairman of Epe Local Government, Hon. (Princess) Surah O. Animashaun, has issued a stern warning to residents and market traders against the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage systems, especially during rainfall.
In a statement on Thursday, Animashaun expressed serious concern over the environmental degradation caused by blocked drainages, which exacerbates flooding during heavy rains.
She emphasized that anyone caught disposing of refuse into gutters and drainages will face the full wrath of the law without exception.
The Council Chairman called on market leaders within the local government to spearhead advocacy and enlightenment campaigns among their members to prevent the blocking of drainages with heaps of refuse.
She warned that severe punishments await any market man or woman caught engaging in such detrimental activities.
Furthermore, house-owners were advised to caution their tenants against dumping their waste into canals.
Reiterating her administration’s commitment to the well-being of the people, Hon. Animashaun assured residents that the local government would continue to prioritize their health and safety by upholding and enforcing environmental laws.
She appealed to all residents, market leaders, men, and women to collaborate in creating a safe, conducive, and habitable environment by adhering to proper waste disposal practices.
“We must all take responsibility for our environment to avoid the severe consequences of flooding and other related hazards,” said Animashaun.
“Let us work together to ensure that our communities remain clean and safe for everyone.”
This strong message from the Epe Local Government Council underscores the importance of collective action in maintaining environmental hygiene and preventing avoidable disasters during the rainy season.
