Epe Mourns as Fatal Accident Claims Teacher’s Life, Injures 16 Others

The Epe community has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Mr. Adeyeye A.A, a beloved teacher at Pobuna Secondary School, Epe. He lost his life in a devastating accident on the Epe-Ijebu Ode Expressway on December 30, 2024.

Ekohotblog reports that the crash occurred around 8:45 PM when an 18-seater bus carrying teachers from a State Audit Verification Exercise in Alausa collided with a trailer driving against traffic. The impact left 16 teachers injured, including a nursing mother and her baby, who were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.

Witnesses and Emergency Response

Eyewitnesses described the scene as horrifying. One witness stated:

“The trailer was speeding in the wrong direction, and before anyone could react, it crashed into the bus. It was chaos.”

Emergency responders, youths, members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), and concerned community members worked tirelessly to rescue victims and transport them to hospitals >

“We commend the efforts of everyone who came together to help. Their quick response saved lives,” said Hon. Giwa Moore, President of the Epe Youth Forum.

Tributes to Mr. Adeyeye

The late Mr. Adeyeye was remembered as a passionate and dedicated educator who left a lasting impact on his students and colleagues. His body has been deposited at the Epe General Hospital morgue, while injured victims receive care at various medical facilities.

The NUT described the loss as devastating:> “Mr. Adeyeye was not just a teacher but a mentor and a role model. We mourn with his family and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

Two severely injured victims, suffering from internal bleeding and fractures, have been referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital for specialized care.

Calls for Action

Community leaders and organizations have called for immediate steps to prevent similar tragedies.

Princess Surah Olayemi Animashaun, Executive Chairman of Epe Local Government, stressed the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations:

“This is a wake-up call for authorities to enforce stricter traffic laws and ensure trailers are properly monitored.”

Hon. Abiodun Tobun, Chairman of the Lagos State House Committee on Commerce, emphasized accountability:>

“Errant drivers must face justice. We also need to provide financial and psychological support for the victims and their families.”

Support and Investigation

The NUT Lagos State Chairman, Comrade Adesina Adebayo, assured the teaching community of the union’s unwavering support. Counselors are being recommended to offer emotional support to survivors and their families.

The NUT and other stakeholders have called for a thorough investigation into the accident to prevent a recurrence.

Honoring a Dedicated Teacher

As Epe grieves, the memory of Mr. Adeyeye serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by teachers every day.>

“We will not forget his dedication and contributions to education in Epe. Let us honor him by advocating for safer roads and better teacher welfare,” said Comrade Adebayo.

The tragic incident has highlighted the urgent need for improved road safety, stricter enforcement of traffic laws, and enhanced welfare for public servants.
