Epe Security Strengthened as Alara Welcomes Naval Commander to Discuss Naval Base Initiative

His Royal Majesty, Oba Dr. Olukayode Olufolarin Ogunsanwo (Telade IV), the Alara of Ilara Kingdom, welcomed Rear Admiral MG Oamen, Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) of the Western Naval Command, to his palace in Epe, Lagos State, on Wednesday.

The visit focused on the ongoing development of a naval base in Ijih, Ilara, a project set to significantly improve the area’s security infrastructure.

Speaking during the event, Oba Ogunsanwo, accompanied by his queen, Olori Bolanle Ogunsanwo, as well as local chiefs and community leaders, described the initiative as transformative for both Ilara and the wider Epe division.

He highlighted the critical role the naval base would play in combating insecurity, particularly in riverine areas prone to criminal activities like kidnappings.

“The establishment of this base represents a vital measure for protecting lives and property. The Navy’s presence will discourage criminal elements and instill a sense of safety in our communities,” the monarch affirmed.

The Alara noted that Ilara Kingdom had donated 30 acres of land to the Navy for the project following a formal request.

Reflecting on previous security breaches, such as the infamous abduction of students from Lagos State Model College Igbonla, he stressed that the base would address such vulnerabilities while fostering peace and stability.

“This naval base complements the Nigerian Army Cantonment in Iraye, creating a comprehensive military presence in Epe that includes the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Beyond enhancing security, the base will drive economic growth and infrastructural development in our region. It’s a development that benefits everyone,” Oba Ogunsanwo added.

Rear Admiral Oamen expressed his gratitude to the Alara for his support, noting that the visit served three key purposes: delivering the appreciation of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral E.I. Okpalla, introducing himself as the new FOC, and reinforcing ties with Ilara Kingdom.

Joining him were Commodore AO Ojebode, Command Operations Officer, Western Naval Command; Brigadier General JN Atahiru, Deputy Commandant of the Nigerian Army Ordnance School; Captain (NN) SO Ohunenese, Commander, Naval Base Epe; and Lt. D.O. Olubamido, Boat Officer, Naval Base Epe.

Addressing the gathering, Oamen acknowledged the Alara’s hospitality and generous donation of land, describing the collaboration as a prime example of how traditional leadership contributes to national security.

“This partnership highlights the crucial role of traditional institutions in fostering safety and development,” he said.

He assured the people of Ilara and Epe of the Navy’s dedication to securing the region, emphasizing that the Navy would serve as both a protective force and a partner in development.

During a media briefing, Rear Admiral Oamen emphasized the importance of engaging with traditional rulers to strengthen military operations.

“Modern security challenges require intelligence sharing and collaboration. Traditional leaders, as custodians of local knowledge, are invaluable allies in addressing criminal activities,” he explained.

“With all security forces present in Epe, it’s a new era for the region. Criminals now have nowhere to hide—whether on land, in the air, or through the waterways, we are prepared to intercept them. This should compel them to reconsider their activities,” he remarked.

The visit concluded with the presentation of an award to Oba Ogunsanwo, recognizing his unwavering commitment to national security efforts.

The occasion featured lively discussions and reaffirmations of mutual dedication to the safety and progress of Ilara and Epe communities.

The Alara closed the ceremony with a prayer for sustained collaboration between the Navy and traditional institutions, stressing the necessity of such alliances for long-term development and community well-being.
