Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has described the potential loss of defender Wesley Fofana for the rest of the season as a “huge loss” after scans confirmed a serious hamstring injury.
The 24-year-old, who has struggled with injuries since his £70 million ($87 million) move from Leicester in 2022, has been out for over a month and will now face an extended period on the sidelines.

Fofana has managed only 32 appearances in his time at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca expressed his disappointment on Friday, stating: “Unfortunately, he could be out for the season. He has a hamstring injury, and we will lose him for a while.
I’ve said many times that I love Wes, and not having him available is a huge loss for us.”
Fofana’s absence adds to Chelsea’s injury woes, with fellow French centre-back Benoit Badiashile also sidelined until February.
On a positive note, captain Reece James and midfielder Romeo Lavia are close to returning from their injuries ahead of Saturday’s match against Crystal Palace.
Despite a disappointing run of just one point from the last three games, Chelsea remains in the top four and on track for a return to the Champions League next season.
Maresca, in his first season with the club, has always maintained that his young squad wasn’t yet ready to challenge for the title, but he believes they are progressing in the right direction.
“We don’t like to lose games and drop points but it’s not going to affect our journey because we all know and are aware that you are going to lose games,” said the Italian.
“The important thing is to see how the team is improving.”
