EPL: Man City’s 115-Count Hearing Concludes, Verdict Pending

Manchester City’s long-awaited hearing regarding 115 breaches of Premier League rules has reportedly concluded, though a verdict is not expected until 2025.

According to the Daily Mail, the case, which began on September 16 at the International Dispute Resolution Centre in London, saw closing arguments presented to an independent panel on Friday.

City, who strongly deny any wrongdoing, could face severe sanctions if found guilty, including the possibility of relegation from the Premier League.

Last season, both Everton and Nottingham Forest were hit with points deductions for violating the league’s profit and sustainability regulations.

The charges against Manchester City involve 80 alleged breaches of financial rules between 2009 and 2018, alongside 35 further charges for failing to cooperate with a Premier League investigation.

Since their 2008 takeover by Sheikh Mansour, a member of the UAE royal family, City have evolved into a dominant force in English football, winning eight of the last 13 Premier League titles, including four consecutive championships over the past four seasons. In 2023, they also secured their first-ever Champions League title.

Despite their achievements, the club’s success has been overshadowed by controversy, with critics frequently referencing the ongoing charges. However, City have consistently denied any wrongdoing and are committed to clearing their name.

The Premier League first filed the charges in February 2023, but it took considerable time before the case was heard by an independent commission.

City are accused of providing inaccurate financial information between 2009 and 2018, including details on sponsorship revenue and player and manager salaries. Other charges involve violations of both UEFA’s and the Premier League’s financial sustainability regulations.

If found guilty, Manchester City is expected to appeal the decision, which would further delay the imposition of any sanctions.

On the field, the team is currently experiencing a difficult run, with just one win from their last nine matches in all competitions.
