EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a statement issued on Sunday, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the body responsible for match officials in English football, has admitted to significant errors in the use of VAR for offside decisions in recent games, including the 1-1 draw between Arsenal and Brentford.
According to the statement, the VAR for the game, Lee Mason, failed to identify that Brentford player Christian Norgaard, who provided the assist for the equalizing goal by Ivan Toney, was in an offside position. As a result, the goal was allowed to stand, despite being offside.
PGMOL’s Chief Refereeing Officer, Howard Webb, has since contacted both Arsenal and Brighton & Hove Albion to acknowledge and explain the errors in the VAR process in their respective Premier League fixtures on Saturday.
The incidents, which were caused by human error in the analysis of offside situations, are being thoroughly reviewed by PGMOL.
In response to the errors, Howard Webb has promised greater openness and transparency in decision-making processes in the future.
This admission and commitment to improvement by PGMOL is a step towards ensuring accuracy and fairness in the use of VAR technology in English football.
The report also suggests that Howard Webb has been pressured to sack the VAR official who awarded Brentford’s goal against Arsenal.
“PGMOL can confirm its Chief Refereeing Officer Howard Webb has contacted both Arsenal and Brighton & Hove Albion to acknowledge and explain the significant errors in the VAR process in their respective Premier League fixtures on Saturday,” a statement issued by PGMOL on Sunday read.
“Both incidents, which were due to human error and related to the analysis of offside situations, are being thoroughly reviewed by PGMOL.”
