Establishment of Nigerian Coast Guard Unnecessary – Oshiomhole

Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North senatorial district, has voiced his opposition to the proposed establishment of the Nigerian Coast Guard, which is intended to protect Nigeria’s maritime areas.

Speaking during a plenary session, Oshiomhole argued that the Nigerian Navy is already effectively carrying out the responsibilities that would be assigned to the Coast Guard.

He referenced past instances, such as the creation of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the National Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), which he believes were unnecessary.

“This is similar to how we established the National Road Safety Commission, which came with a large overhead. When I was younger, this function was performed by the traffic division of the Nigeria Police, and they were more efficient than the current system,” Oshiomhole remarked.

He continued, “For those of you who travel by road, I’m not sure how helpful you find the Road Safety Commission, but it exists.

The same can be said about the creation of the Nigeria Civil Defence to protect pipelines and government property. Today, I can’t say for certain whether these properties are any safer.”

Oshiomhole concluded by suggesting that decisions like these should be referred to the National Security Adviser and the executive branch, who are in a better position to assess whether new institutions are necessary. “For now, our focus should be on strengthening the Navy,” he said.
