Estonian PM Steps Down for EU Job

Published

on

Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas resigned on Monday to become the European Union’s next foreign policy chief, following her nomination by the bloc’s leaders.

Eko Hot Blog gathered that Kallas, who has led Estonia since 2021, submitted her resignation letter to the president but will continue to serve until a new government is formed and sworn in.

“This was a very hard time,” Kallas said in an interview with Estonian public radio on Monday, reflecting on her tenure as the first woman prime minister of Estonia.

EDITOR’S PICK

“I started when the Covid crisis was at its peak and I was probably the only prime minister who immediately after being sworn in went to a government meeting and started making decisions.”

The outgoing premier is also expected to step down as leader of her Reform party later this summer.

The Reform party has selected the current climate minister, Kristen Michal, as their candidate for prime minister.

Estonian President Alar Karis will now hold discussions with the parties to decide who will replace Kallas.
