As the excitement in the stadium reached a fever pitch, Mourinho received a red card from French referee Clement Turpin just before the hour mark while advocating for a penalty after Bright Osayi-Samuel went down following a challenge from United midfielder Manuel Ugarte.
Despite strong protests from the Fenerbahce bench, VAR confirmed Turpin’s decision that no foul had occurred, prompting the referee to approach Mourinho and ask him to leave the technical area.

United had opportunities to secure a win, but substitute Rasmus Hojlund chose to shoot instead of passing to the better-positioned Alejandro Garnacho, allowing his shot to roll harmlessly to home goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic.
Garnacho also squandered a chance, losing control of the ball as he entered the penalty area.
The visitors faced another injury setback, as manager Erik ten Hag had hoped to avoid, when Brazilian winger Antony was stretchered off after landing awkwardly following an unnecessary flick by the touchline.
