The annual contest, held in Malmo, Sweden, has drawn 100,000 visitors and heavy police presence.
Swiss rapper Nemo qualified with “The Code,” a song about self-discovery as a non-binary person.
“Singing this song in front of a live audience…made me really emotional,” Nemo said.
“I think it’s really important that we have so much queer representation this year.”
Israeli solo artist Eden Golan qualified with “Hurricane,” despite booing from the crowd.
“I’m so overwhelmed with emotions…it’s truly such an honor to be here on stage performing and showing our voice and representing us with pride,”Golan said.
Eurovision organizers resisted calls to exclude Israel over its military campaign in Gaza, arguing the competition is non-political.
Pro-Palestinian campaigners, including Greta Thunberg, staged a non-violent protest, while a smaller group of pro-Israeli supporters defended Golan’s participation.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Golan, saying she represented Israel “with enormous honor” and contended with “an ugly wave of antisemitism.”
Armenia, Austria, Estonia, Georgia, Greece, Latvia, and Norway also qualified for the final.
