Every Part Of Nigeria Is Struggling With Conflicts —UK High Commisssioner
Catriona Laing, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, expressed concern about the country’s worsening security situation, promising that the UK government was committed to assisting Nigeria in its battle against insecurity.
On Tuesday, March 30, Laing shared these views to journalists on the sidelines of reception to welcome home the 2019/2020 UK Chevening Scholarship recipients.
“The worsening security situation is highly concerning to us.
“I say, insurgency is a problem in the Northeast; banditry and kidnapping are problems in the Northwest; farmers-herders conflict is a problem in the Middle Belt; and the Niger Delta conflict is a problem in the South.
“As well as the secessionist movements in the South. As a result, Nigeria is in a lot of trouble,” Liang said.
The UK government, according to Laing, has been assisting the Nigerian military in the areas of recruitment, campaign preparation, and IED countermeasures.

“Well, we’re here to assist and help you. We have a military contingent here, which arrived after the Chibok girls were abducted. We’re still in Nigeria, educating the Nigerian military and assisting them with campaign preparation and IED countermeasures,” Laing explained.
However, Laing urged the Nigerian government to be more clear about the assistance they need from the UK and what the UK can provide.
“So, we’ll be here for a while. This is a Nigerian-led collaboration. If we don’t help you deal with your insecurity, it becomes our insecurity. So, we’re here, and we’re doing all we can to help you,” the envoy said.
