Ex-Accountant General Pleads for Time to Refund Looted Funds
A former acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Anamekwe Nwabuoku, has requested additional time from the Federal High Court in Abuja to complete the refund of public funds he and his co-defendant, Felix Nweke, allegedly looted.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that the duo faces 11 counts of money laundering totaling N1.6 billion, brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Nwabuoku and Nweke are accused of committing the crimes while Nwabuoku served as Director of Finance and Accounts in the Ministry of Defence between 2019 and 2021.
The defendants requested a delay in their arraignment to finalize the refund, citing ongoing efforts to settle the matter.
Nweke’s lawyer, Emeka Onyeaka, informed the court that his client had made substantial refunds and was awaiting confirmation from the EFCC.
“The second defendant has taken steps… there is a communication to the commission via-a-vs the alleged offences on making a refund. The commission is in receipt of the money and promised to communicate to us,” he said.
Maduakolam Igwe, representing Nwabuoku, aligned with Onyeaka’s submission, stating that his client had also made refunds and was seeking time to complete the administrative procedure.
However, EFCC counsel Ogechi Ujam clarified that while a proposal letter was received, no negotiation, settlement, or agreement had been reached between parties.
The court will determine the next steps in the case.
