Ex-Anambra Commissioner Postpones Daughter’s Marriage Over Covid19 Pandemic

Chief Godson Chukwuma Ezenagu, former commissioner for agriculture and rural development in Anambra state, has said that the coronavirus is not a mere fantasy and as such members of the public should be self-defensive as well as protective themselves due to the sporadic and contagious nature of the virus through person to person transmissions.

Ezenagu said that in compliance with the ban on all forms of public and social gatherings, his daughter’s church wedding, Dr.Amanda Nkiruka Ezenagu which was earlier scheduled to hold 18th April this year was put on hold pending when the coronavirus pandemic will subside.

He said, ” though it is heart-rending to have a wedding ceremony shifted one can not do otherwise due to the public health crisis we are facing currently. You also know that there is a total lockdown of activities in the state due to the covid19 virus but there is nothing one can do rather than to be law-abiding and wait until the coast is clear; then we can have the wedding ceremony in peace .”

Also in another development, Ezenagu who currently functions as the President-General of Ndigbo United Forum Worldwide, a socio-political Igbo organization revealed that 80% of rural Igbo communities were ignorant of the deadly COVID-19.

The former official of the Anambra State Government who disclosed this to our correspondent in an interview, said that a study carried out by Ndigbo United Forum in various villages showed that only about 20 per cent of rural dwellers know about the disease and various ways to protect themselves.

The President-General noted that “A study of the situation in the various villages in Igboland by Ndi-Igbo United Forum shows that only about 20 per cent of them understood the outbreak of the virus as well as the preventive measures being canvassed,”

He said the organization, therefore, called on traditional rulers, presidents-general, local government chairmen and other leaders to commence aggressive sensitisation campaigns on COVID-19 in all the communities in Igboland especially his home state Anambra.

“We hereby call on Ndi Igwe, presidents-general, councillors, local government chairmen as well as government appointees to take responsibility for the immediate dissemination of information on measures to be taken to prevent the spread of the disease since they live right there with them in their various communities,”

He said Ndigbo United Forum Worldwide, however,r commended the South-East governours as well as their counterparts in Rivers and Delta states in South-South geopolitical zone for their efforts to ensure that the dreaded virus does not spread in their states.

NUF which also commended other stakeholders who have made relevant contributions to the fight against COVID-19 asked them to give at least 25 per cent of their donations to their various state governments as charity begins at home.

“We salute the boldness and sportsmanship of all men and women of Igbo extraction who have donated various amounts of money and materials towards the fight against coronavirus.

“Ndi-Igbo United Forum hereby admonishes them to give a minimum of 25 per cent of their donations to the states they come from. Charity begins at home, though should not stop there,” Ezenagu added.
