Liverpool defender Joel Matip has announced his plans to retire from professional football after leaving the club as a free agent next summer, according to a post by Fabrizio Romano on Friday.

Matip, 33, suffered a severe injury late in 2023 that sidelined him for much of the season, preventing him from playing any part in Jurgen Klopp’s final campaign as Liverpool manager.

The Cameroonian defender, who is one of 11 players set to depart Liverpool at the end of their contracts, is the only one yet to finalize his next steps.

With Thiago Alcantara recently retired and others like Adrian, Mateusz Musialowski, and Melkamu Frauendorf moving to new clubs, Matip has been carefully considering his future.

Matip began his professional career at Schalke 04 in 2009, helping the team win the DFB-Pokal and DFL-Supercup in 2011.
