In a statement shared on his social media accounts on Friday, the 51-year-old, who led Nigeria to gold in the Men’s Football Tournament at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, recounted his harrowing experience.

“To God be the glory, another death escaped by Grace and Mercy of God. Me and my friend SM were at Enyo Filling Station after Ojodu Berger bus stop to get fuel on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, around 6 p.m. when this MACK truck fully loaded with iron, with registration number LND 470 XX, left the road and crushed my car beyond repairs. Thank God for life,” he stated.
This marks the second time the soft-spoken club owner has narrowly escaped death, having previously survived a life-altering accident in 1997 that cut his career short at the age of 23 and severely damaged his spinal cord.
He was instrumental in helping Julius Berger win the Nigeria FA Cup in November 1997, just after an unforgettable Olympic performance where he kept a clean sheet in the finals against Katsina United.
However, the following year, he was involved in a serious car accident on Ikorodu Road in Lagos, which not only ended his playing career but also left him nearly paralyzed, effectively concluding his tenure at Serie A club Reggiana.
The former Nigeria international, who also played for Julius Berger FC, reported the incident to the Isheri Police Station in Ogun State, where the truck driver is currently in custody and the vehicle has been confiscated.
According to him, the truck’s owner claims that repairs on the severely damaged SUV won’t be possible for at least a year.
